MOST COMMON ROOFING TERMS:
- CDX PLYWOOD- the most commonly used exterior plywood sheathing
- DECK/SHEATHING- this is the part the roof is attached to, usually
plywood
- DORMER- a structure projecting from a sloped roof, usually with a
window
- DRIP EDGE- an L shaped piece of metal attached to the edge of the
roof to force water to drip clear of the roof deck, usually into gutters
- EAVE- This is the bottom edge of a sloped roof-the part that extends/overhangs
the main structure of the house
- FASCIA- The board or metal that is attached to the end of the rafters.
Most homeowners would recognize this as the piece behind the gutters
- FELT- An asphalt base matte underneath the roof shingles to further
protect the deck from water. Also known as tar paper
- FLASHING- Sheet metal installed wherever two or more surfaces meet
to keep out water, i.e. chimney, valley, vent pipes
- FRT PLYWOOD- fire treated plywood required on some homes, usually
townhouses
- LOUVER- Used to ventilate the roof system, can be installed on the
roof itself or at the ends of a house
- PENETRATIONS- Anything that penetrates the roof from the underside
such as a chimney or bathroom vent pipe. aka: vent stack boot
- RAKE-The side edges of a sloped roof
- RIDGE- Typically known as the roof peak
- RIDGE VENT- An opening along entire peak to alleviate excess attic
heat buildup
