What to Do if Roof Leaking

A leaking roof can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. Roof leaks can cause damage to your belongings and other areas of your home, lead to expensive repairs, and even pose a health hazard to your family. It is vital to act quickly to minimize damage.

Signs of a Roof Leak

Even if the leak is not bad yet, you should get it fixed now to save you time, money, and hassle.

A roof leak is not always dramatic and easily noticed. If you aren’t experiencing an active drip, there are signs that indicate you may have a leak in need of repair.

From inside the home: dark spots, sagging ceilings, or spots in the attic where outside light shines through. From outside the home: Missing or damaged shingles, clogged gutters and downspouts, and damaged or damaged sealant around chimneys, vents, and flashing.

7 Steps to Take

As soon as you notice your roof is leaking, it is important to act quickly and take the necessary steps to prevent further damage.

1. Protect your furniture and belongings. Remove your belongings from the affected area and place plastic sheeting over the furniture to protect it from water damage.

2. Contain the water. Place a bucket or trash can under the leak to catch the water and use towels to soak up water that has accumulated on the floor.

3. Relieve the pressure. If there is a sagging section of your ceiling where water is pooling from a leak, you need to drain the water to prevent further damage or collapse. Use a screwdriver to poke a small hole in the bulge. Make sure there is a bucket below to catch the water.

4. Identify the source of the leak. During the daytime, go into the attic and check for any holes that let sunshine through or other visible damage. Outside, from the ground, visually inspect the roof for any missing or damaged patches of shingles.

5. Temporarily seal the leak from inside. It’s not advised to climb onto the roof to place tarps over damaged areas. Use roofing tape and/or caulk from inside the attic to seal holes and prevent further water flow until repairs can be made.

6. Call a trusted local roofing company. The possible causes of a roof leak are numerous. A thorough inspection and repairs or roof replacement should be handled by a professional roofing contractor. Research or get recommendations for a reliable roofing company in your area.

7. Practice good roof maintenance. To prevent further damage and future roof leaks, perform regular roof maintenance like biannual inspections, cleaning gutters, and trimming nearby tree branches.
